About us

The LGA is the national representative body for local government in England. Working on behalf of councils to support, promote and improve local government. We also represent Welsh councils through a corporate membership arrangement with the Welsh LGA.

We are a politically led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils to help them deliver local solutions to national problems.  We also provide councils with the tools and resources to respond to challenges present and emerging, and support improvement across the sector.

About the role

We are looking for a new Interim Director of Strategy and Reform to set the strategic direction of the LGA as an organisation and as the representative body for local government.

This is a key leadership role working with the Chief Executive, the political leadership of the LGA and the wider Senior Management Team to ensure the LGA has ambitious and deliverable evidence-based models to achieve public service reform, and boost the impact of prevention and early intervention strategies.

This role provides a fantastic development opportunity for a senior council colleague, perhaps an aspiring chief executive, to utilise their experience and knowledge to help promote, improve and support local government at a time of significant national change.

You will lead on the development of our corporate strategy and our annual/medium term corporate/business planning processes to ensure that we have an effective organisational strategy in place, with a clear operating model, and a cogent set of structures and capabilities to deliver our priorities, now and in the future and lead our corporate transformation and change programme.

About you

You will bring a strong, recent track record of successfully leading significant transformation projects, change leadership and programmes within local government and understand the challenges facing the sector and residents.

You will have a successful track record of engaging effectively with others, building productive relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. You will be able to develop and maintain networks that foster personal and organisational credibility with your highly developed communication skills, to achieve outcomes and deliver change through people.

You will be an empowering leader, inspiring confidence, energy and enthusiasm to motivate and create a high performing, resilient, and inclusive workforce.  A strategic thinker, capable of seeing the bigger picture, by designing and articulating a clear vision for change in a changing environment.
