About us

The Local Government Pension Scheme Advisory Board (www.lgpsboard.org) is a body set up under Section 7 of the Public Service Pensions Act 2013 and The Local Government Pension Scheme Regulations 110-113. It consists of representatives from scheme employers and scheme members together with observers and advisors from the pensions industry.

The role

The LGA pensions team provides a small secretariat to the Advisory Board of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) in England and Wales. The Board works on behalf of the scheme’s 87 administering authorities, 14,000 scheme employers and 5 million members and closely with the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). To be part of this team is to be a vital element in the policy and legislative framework of the largest funded pension scheme in the UK.
We are looking for an inspirational individual, to work alongside experienced and talented pensions experts and to take on particular responsibilities for the secretariat.
Reporting directly to the Head of Pensions, the successful candidate will be the lead on key Board projects, manage the day to day work of the secretariat, be responsible for a budget in excess of £0.5m and deputise in the role of Secretary to the Board.

The requirements

You will have the knowledge, experience and credibility to effectively support scheme stakeholders, liaise with government departments and deliver the Board’s workplan. In doing so you will help to ensure an affordable, sustainable and comprehensible pension scheme continues to be available to the millions of employees and pensioners who rely on it for their future security. We are looking for a strategic thinker who is capable of being technical, a problem solver who also understands the workings of the scheme and a people person who can focus on the objective.  We are interested in someone who can work with other experts, to develop evidence-based policy solutions and provide clarity in a very complex subject area.
This role provides you with a chance to raise your profile on a national stage. You’ll be regularly working alongside senior council officers, national employee representatives and central government officials as well as attending both formal and ad hoc national bodies and working groups. Your immediate focus will be on a number of ongoing Board projects, particularly regarding governance and responsible investment, and legislative developments that will directly affect the structure and management of the scheme and will bring with them significant policy challenges.
The person we offer this post to will be an excellent innovator who can work in a complex and fast-paced environment. The role will require you to be flexible in your work arrangements as it will involve office based and occasional home working, travel around the UK and a requirement to regularly be in London, sometimes at very short notice and at times overnight.

Closing Date:     5pm, Sunday 27th September 2020
Interview Date:   Week beginning 12th October 2020, interviews will be held remotely
