The role

The LGA is recruiting an adviser to support its policy development work at an incredibly exciting and challenging time for its member councils.

Local government is in a unique and powerful leadership position to help achieve Net Zero, adapt to climate change and lead local economic growth; and this post will play a key role in helping local government secure the powers and funding it needs to deliver on these urgent issues for communities.
The successful candidate will need to be:

•    Politically and socially aware and be able to demonstrate a proven track record in public policy making.
•    Build and maintain networks and contacts across local and central government and with key partners to help meet local government’s ambitions
•    Able to grasp issues quickly, analyse the implications for local government of national policy, and use policy and research skills to generate policy proposals,
•    Demonstrate excellent communications skills to promote and lobby for further powers and funding to local government.

You will work as part of a small team, collaborating closely with colleagues in media and public affairs as well as the LGA’s political groups, and you will forge effective relationships with our member councils, external partners and stakeholders and central government.

The requirements

You will have the knowledge, experience and credibility to engage with government and organisations from across the public, private and voluntary sectors. Able to take a strategic and forward-thinking approach, you will have political awareness and a track record of making a difference.

The person we offer this post to will be an excellent communicator, problem-solver and team player with a proven background in public policy making. You will have experience in using a range of communication tools. A background in climate change, environment or economic growth policy is not necessary but your ability to grasp complex issues quickly will make you stand out.
