The LGA pensions team provides a small secretariat to the Advisory Board of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) in England and Wales. The Board works on behalf of the scheme’s 87 administering authorities, 14,000 scheme employers and 5 million members, and closely with the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC). To be part of this team is to be a vital element in the policy and legislative framework of the largest funded pension scheme in the UK.
The Local Government Pension Scheme Advisory Board (www.lgpsboard.org) is a body set up under Section 7 of the Public Service Pensions Act 2013 and The Local Government Pension Scheme Regulations 110-113. It consists of representatives from scheme employers and scheme members together with observers and advisors from the pensions industry.

We are looking for a Pensions Secretary to provide professional secretariat support to the Board and its committees, along with taking a lead role on developing and assuring the Board’s digital presence. The role will also include leading on supporting and reporting on the Board’s Cost Transparency system. The role will involve all aspects of organising and preparing for meetings; as well as minuting and ensuring post-meetings duties are completed. The post holder will work with members of the SAB secretariat and wider pensions team to ensure the Board is well supported, and that its committees are able to operate efficiently and purposefully. You will act as a lead contact for colleagues in providing advice and guidance on governance and compliance matters.
You will be expected to work collaboratively with other members of the SAB secretariat, and the wider LGA pensions team, to ensure the SAB meets its declared objectives.

The salary for a home-based worker is from £42,821 pa or office-based from £46,533 pa (including London Weighting). The office-based working will be in line with our transitional flexible working policy as we begin to go back into the office again following COVID-19.
It is essential that you have a broad experience of all aspects of committee administration within a local authority or similar democratic organisation, and that you can write and communicate well. We are looking for a team player with good organisational abilities, and experience of drafting reports and papers to a high technical level within strict deadlines. Knowledge and experience of the regulations governing the LGPS is essential.
Experience of managing relationships and dealing effectively with internal and external customers, advising senior officers and elected members on multifaceted issues in a complex technical and political environment would be an advantage. Political sensitivity, with the ability to exercise discretion and to demonstrate political neutrality at all times is important.
Excellent IT skills, including up to date knowledge and experience of website development, maintenance and accessibility requirements is essential. It is expected that you will also have experience using Word, Excel, PowerPoint and common Content Management Systems such as Joomla, with the ability to quickly learn new packages as required.
The ability to explain and present complex technical pensions matters clearly to a non-technical audience is desirable.
The successful candidate can expect to take on a varied and wide-ranging portfolio of important work.
