Closing Date: 30/06/2022

Salary: £47,347 - £53,684

Employment Type: Fixed term or secondment considered, full-time

Department: Policy - Place, LGA

Hours Per Week: 35 hours per week

Fixed term until 31 March 2024

After a successful three years of getting landlords to remediate high rise blocks with unsafe cladding. The national fire safety Joint Inspection Team, is expanding.  We are recruiting a number of posts for a contract up to March 2024.

This is a unique opportunity to be at the cutting edge of making buildings safe, in the lead up to the HSE taking over as the new fire safety regulator for occupied buildings.

The JIT is a multi disciplinary team currently compromised of a fire engineer, a building controller, Environmental Health professionals (we use Housing Act 2004 legislation to do HHSRS risk assessments of the fire safety in blocks), an intelligence officer, and legal advisors.

Most of the team’s work involves site inspections (over two days), preparation ahead of the inspection, and follow up work, including drafting reports and helping councils to enforce using Housing Act 2004.  The team also delivers training courses to local authority staff to help them undertake their own enforcement.  The team is based in London, but you will be required to travel across the country to carry out site inspections, and to advise local authorities.  There are opportunities for home working: currently about half the working week.  All hotels and travel to site inspections is paid for by the LGA.  The JIT team is funded by Central Government, but is independent in all professional judgements - our clients are local authorities.

The Local Government Association (LGA) is looking to recruit an experienced Environmental Health Officer to work in the national fire safety Joint Inspection Team (JIT).

You will advise local authorities in using the Housing Act 2004 to assess the hazard risk of high-rise residential buildings with combustible cladding, and in taking enforcement action against building owners who are slow to remediate. Experience in court enforcement action and some knowledge of fire safety is essential, although you will receive training.

If you would like more information or a chat about the role, please email Brian Castle brian.castle@local.gov.uk

You must have the right to work in the UK, the LGA are unfortunately unable to offer sponsorship visas. Evidence for the right to work in the UK will be requested at the interview stage.

Closing Date:     5pm,  30 June 2022
Interview Date:  11 & 12 July 2022
