The role
The LGA is seeking to appoint a regionally based Principal Adviser for the South East with experience of local government at a senior, strategic level.

Principal Advisers are the LGA's focal point for discussions with councils about their improvement needs and the support we can make available – working with existing sector-owned improvement bodies at sub-national level and with colleagues supporting children's services improvement and adults/health.

Principal Advisers have a key role in identifying good and innovative practice, which is fed back into the LGA to inform the wider improvement offer to the sector. They work closely with other LGA colleagues, including elected Member Peers, contributing to the LGA's wider policy development and lobbying work and helping to identify councils from their areas who are keen to get more actively involved in this aspect of the LGA's work.

Each Principal Adviser is responsible for one or more regions. They have extensive experience of working at a senior level in local government and the wider local public sector.

Post holder must live in or close to the South East region.

The successful candidate will be expected to behave in ways, which express clear political impartiality.

The requirements

A strong and varied record of achievement at a senior level in complex political environments; a deep understanding of local government including the policy and improvement agenda and significant senior level experience of building and maintaining strategic relationships.

You will be confident and credible in working with leading members, chief executives and senior officers and be able to deliver and lead your team under pressure with competing pressures.

You will hit the ground running, using your abilities and experience to effectively manage and maintain relationships with individual local authorities, networks and groupings of authorities and to ensure effective delivery of projects and programmes to support sector-led improvement.
