Job Description

The primary role of the Duty Safety Officer is to provide a proactive approach to Glasgow Airport’s overall fire safety strategy, thus minimising the risk of fire. The secondary role is that of a safety response to domestic calls to Glasgow Airport’s Terminal and other buildings. To assess, evaluate and, when required, action further response to calls made via the Automatic Fire Alarm system or by the Airport Control Centre (ACC) alerting system. On the arrival of Scottish Fire & Rescue, act in a liaison capacity to facilitate topography and building layout. Also operate as an integral part of the Airport Duty Team undertaking Clean, Working and Friendly initiatives.

Principle accountabilities

  • Complete Terminal Fire Safety Inspections daily and initiates corrective action when needed.
  • Attend daily meetings with the terminal duty team headed by the Airport Duty Team and raise appropriate incidents, issues and actions required.
  • Complete regular Fire Safety Inspections & Fire Risk Assessments of all Glasgow Airport owned properties; act on, feedback or escalate outputs of inspection and assessment where appropriate.
  • Inspect and service extinguishers, hose reels & fire hydrants in line with the company testing schedule.
  • Undertake the training of Glasgow Airport staff and tenants in mandatory Fire Precautions and H&S Training.
  • Act as a training co-ordinator, arranging training, venues and tracking departmental mandatory training needs.
  • Visit all “hot work” permit areas for inspection whilst work is in progress.
  • Carry out where necessary fire alarm system testing in all Glasgow Airport owned property.
  • Carry out evacuation role in terminal and other buildings during evacuation drills.
  • Carry out testing of Dry Riser & Hydrant Systems.
  • Maintain proper & adequate records in relation to all duties carried out.
  • Raise and manage purchase orders as required including extinguishers and spares, first aid supplies, uniform etc. including management of budget lines.
  • Assist in resolving GRNI and invoice on hold issues
  • Attend incident debriefs & ensure all necessary follow-up actions are completed making recommendations for preventing similar incidents
  • Assist in all Clean, Working and Friendly support functions when required.
  • Respond to investigate and liaise to all Automatic Fire Alarms.
  • Respond to investigate and liaise to all 222 (ACC) emergency calls.
  • Respond to first aid calls when requested.
  • Respond to requests for assistance from airport departments or tenant/concession staff.
  • Assist and advise Strathclyde Fire Brigade on hand over of control.
  • To respond/escalate employees’ or passengers’ safety concerns
  • To liaise with the Airport Fire Service regarding emergency procedures, communications and fire safety education programs
  • To assist all staff in emergency preparedness
  • Maintains Liaison with key stakeholders including Airport Duty Manager, Airport management, Health & Safety Department, Airport Fire Service

  • To assist key Airport teams in complying with current Safety legislation and/or regulations with the objective of ensuring that all reasonable and proper measures are taken to protect the safety and health of staff and passengers.
  • To comply with all legal and statutory obligations applicable to this role
  • To ensure that the activities required by the safety, security and environmental/sustainable development management systems are delivered throughout the areas of responsibility of this role
  • Assist with the development and implementation of training to ensure compliance with all mandated rules and regulations
  • To increase safety awareness at all levels within the organisation

Qualifications and experience

  • Educated to a Higher Standard
  • Hold a current Full Driving Licence
  • Must hold current first aid and defibrillator certificate or prepared to work towards
  • Should be trained to advance first aid levels (e.g. NHS First responder scheme) or prepared to work towards.
  • Computer literate - competent in MS Office Suite
  • Good organisational and administration skills
  • A sound understanding of the importance of Health and Safety requirements
  • Hold FETA certificate (or equivalent) for maintenance of extinguisher equipment
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Fire Risk Assessment processes, automatic fire alarm systems and protection systems, Scottish Fire & Rescue procedures. Hydrant, extinguisher and hose reel testing procedures or prepared to work towards.
  • Ability to communicate information quickly with accuracy is very important, especially in emergency situations and when under pressure.
  • Ability to obtain cooperation from those to who are not in direct supervision
  • Excellent communication skills are essential; both verbally and written
  • Good geographical and local knowledge.

Special Requirements

  • Well-developed IT skills, largely in standard software applications
  • Ability to obtain suitable security clearance to satisfy Civil & Military requirements.
  • CRC & GSAT clearance required for airside pass.
  • CTC also required

Framework and boundaries

  • The post holder works within set procedures and is responsible for making decisions concerning the effective operation within their area of responsibility. The post holder is required to initiate action to prevent problems arising and to deal effectively with problems when they arise.
  • Consults with Landside Management team for support and guidance where actions and procedures are less clearly defined.
  • Able to take some decisions on workload but may need to refer a number of wider issues to the relevant managers.
  • Work within AGS Purchasing guidelines
  • Tracking of Mandatory training and Risk Assessments within airport guidelines
  • Work within Health and Safety Regulations and ensure that they are met, with the appropriate actions taken where necessary
