Job Description

At Bath & North East Somerset Council we have one overriding purpose – to improve people’s lives.

Heritage Services - Based at The Pump Room, Stall Street, Bath

Full Time Permanent Contract with some shift working - (two positions available)

Step into one of the most iconic heritage sites in the world and help us protect, maintain, and enhance a unique ancient monument visited by over a million people each year. The Roman Baths is a complex historic environment with hot springs, high‑humidity spaces, ancient stone structures and modern public areas and we’re looking for skilled Maintenance Technicians to help keep it all running safely and smoothly.

This is a rare opportunity to work hands‑on in a nationally significant Scheduled Ancient Monument, supporting the daily operation of a world‑class visitor attraction.

About the role of Heritage Maintenance Technician

As a Maintenance Technician you’ll be part of our in‑house maintenance team delivering essential repairs, inspections, installations and reactive maintenance across the Roman Baths site. You’ll help ensure our buildings, plant, equipment and public spaces remain safe, accessible and well‑maintained for visitors and staff.

You’ll work in a dynamic live visitor environment, prioritising tasks, responding to issues as they arise, and carrying out repairs with sensitivity to the historic fabric of the site. From small‑scale building repairs and painting to assessing faults and supporting contractors on specialist works, your role helps safeguard both the functionality and heritage of this unique place.

  • Undertaking inspections, fault‑finding and repairs to maintain safe and accessible spaces across the Roman Baths estate.
  • Carrying out general building maintenance including minor repairs, painting and decorating, and small installations.
  • Responding to reactive maintenance issues in a busy public environment, ensuring minimal disruption to visitors.
  • Working in heritage‑sensitive environments, including hot, humid and corrosive areas influenced by natural spring water
  • Supporting and overseeing contractors, ensuring work is completed safely and in line with heritage requirements.
  • Maintaining accurate records of inspections, repairs and asset information
  • Helping set up and support events and operational activities across the site.

About You

You’ll be a practical, proactive person with strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to work safely and independently. You will bring:

  • NVQ Level 3 in a relevant maintenance or building services trade (or equivalent).
  • Experience diagnosing faults and undertaking repairs using appropriate tools and methods.
  • Knowledge of safe working practices, tools and equipment.
  • Experience working in heritage, historic, public‑facing or complex buildings (desirable).
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work alongside contractors, colleagues and visitors.

You’ll be comfortable working in environments that may involve moderate physical activity, confined or humid spaces, outdoor conditions and occasionally challenging behaviour from members of the public.
