Job Description

At Bath & North East Somerset Council we have one overriding purpose – to improve people’s lives.

At Bath & North East Somerset Council, we're committed to improving people's lives. We're looking for an organised, customer-focused and detail-oriented Environmental Information Officer to join our Public Protection Service and help support the delivery of vital environmental health, food safety, health and safety and trading standards functions.

About the Role

This is a varied and rewarding role at the heart of our Public Protection team. You'll be the first point of contact for many enquiries from residents, businesses and partner organisations, helping to ensure that requests are handled efficiently and directed to the right specialist officers.

You will play a key role in maintaining service records, managing information systems, supporting regulatory teams and ensuring the smooth administration of a range of public protection functions.

What you'll be doing

  • Monitoring and managing shared service inboxes and incoming enquiries.
  • Answering telephone and email enquiries from residents, businesses and colleagues.
  • Recording, triaging and referring requests to the appropriate officers.
  • Creating and maintaining records on Uniform and associated systems.
  • Registering food businesses and maintaining accurate premises records.
  • Processing complaints, accident reports, appeals and regulatory correspondence.
  • Supporting Food Safety, Health & Safety and Trading Standards teams with administrative processes.
  • Uploading and maintaining electronic documents and case records.
  • Processing purchase orders, invoice requests and supporting finance administration.
  • Ensuring information is accurate, auditable and maintained to a high standard.

About You

We're looking for someone who:

  • Has excellent organisational and administrative skills.
  • Enjoys helping people and providing excellent customer service.
  • Can communicate clearly and professionally with a wide range of people.
  • Has strong attention to detail and can maintain accurate records.
  • Is confident using Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Can manage competing priorities and work accurately under pressure.
  • Is comfortable dealing with public enquiries and occasionally challenging situations.
  • Enjoys working collaboratively as part of a supportive team.

Experience of working within local government, environmental health, public protection, food safety, health and safety, licensing, trading standards or another regulatory environment would be advantageous, although training will be provided. Knowledge of Uniform/IDOX systems would also be beneficial but is not essential.

What we offer

Working for Bath & North East Somerset Council means joining an organisation that is:

  • Bold – innovative and focused on delivering outcomes.
  • Empowered – trusting staff to make decisions and develop their skills.
  • Supportive – collaborative, caring and committed to teamwork.
  • Transparent – open, honest and accountable in everything we do.

In return, you'll benefit from:

  • Flexible and hybrid working opportunities.
  • Generous annual leave entitlement.
  • Local Government Pension Scheme membership.
  • Learning and development opportunities.
  • A supportive and inclusive working environment.
  • The chance to make a real difference to communities across Bath and North East Somerset.
