Job Description

At Bath & North East Somerset Council we have one overriding purpose – to improve people’s lives.

We are looking to appoint a full time experienced historic built environment professional on a permanent basis.  You will work within a team comprising conservation / planning officers, as well as other specialists.

The post involves a range of work including managing and recommending decisions on listed building consent and planning applications; guiding new developments and projects that have historic environment implications; conservation area designation, review and appraisal; heritage at risk, work on innovative projects like the introduction of Local Listed Building Consent Orders, contributing to local plan policy development.  You may also be a mentor to less experienced officers.

The international significance and importance of Bath is recognised by its two World Heritage Site inscriptions. Beyond Bath the Council’s area has a rich and diverse historic environment. There are over 6,000 listed buildings (3% Grade I, 10% Grade II*), 35 conservation areas, 16 registered historic parks and gardens as well as many undesignated local heritage assets.

You will need to have a degree in a relevant subject, membership of or working towards IHBC and demonstrate experience with a proven track record of giving effective historic environment advice within the planning process and achieving excellent results. This will include knowledge and understanding of national and local historic environment policy and legislation.

If you are forward thinking, ambitious, and keen to make a real difference in a world class environment and would like to join our team, we would be delighted to hear from you.

We support flexible working with the opportunity to move between the award-winning, modern Civic Centre in Keynsham which will be your main office base, and other Council locations in Bath and Midsomer Norton as well as some homeworking.
