Primarily working from home, but work may be required from an office at intervals, as well as longer periods of work anywhere in the UK for up to one week in duration. Occasional international visits may be required.

Job Purpose

  • To support the business requirements for the provision of internal applications services.
  • To deliver an effective support and maintenance service for identified business applications.
  • To undertake the implementation of application developments, including defined projects where assigned.


Principal Accountabilities

  • Supporting the business requirements for the provision of internal applications management services.
  • Implementing application development requirements, with a constant focus on co-ordinating business efficiencies through the activities of applications development.
  • Liaising with IT infrastructure services, in support of applications maintenance and development activities.
  • Providing continual support of business processes that use one or many applications or application services through common communication channels and service desk ticketing software.
  • Maintaining applications to support resilient and well performing delivery of services to multiple platforms.
  • Identifying root cause of application problems, recommending paths to resolve, and fixing where appropriate.
  • Co-ordinating and assisting each line of business with opportunities for shared applications and common business efficiencies.
  • Defining, planning and managing releases of application updates.
  • Supporting improvement initiatives involving business applications.
  • Supporting the strategy for strategic, tactical and maintenance activities.
  • Taking responsibility for: time management; reporting and monitoring; risk management; issue management; quality assurance and change management.
  • Acting as technical expert for identified internal applications, sharing knowledge as appropriate through intranet documentation and running training sessions
  • Supporting other application team members and assigned resources as appropriate to the implementation of application related activities.
  • Carrying out other tasks as agreed with the Internal Applications Support Manager.

  • Internal Applications Service – Delivery of the internal applications service to the business, without significant failure or poor service performance.
  • Applications Support – Manage day-to-day tasks and issues with a positive and flexible approach.
  • Applications Delivery – Delivery of business applications, achieving tasks and associated deliverables as agreed on assignment to a development project or activity.
  • Technical Support – Ensures the necessary support and advice is provided in an effective manner, demonstrating a good technical understanding of identified internal applications.

Knowledge, skills and experience required

  • Qualifications – Degree qualified and relevant professional qualification and experience (e.g. MCSD, MCSE, OCP)
  • Experience – significant development experience, in a role that requires application development in a project environment. Aware of industry and professional standards (e.g. ISO 9001)
  • Training – Formal training in Service Management disciplines (e.g. ITIL)
  • Skills – Familiar with application development tools (e.g. Visual Studio, Oracle Developer). Familiar with specified programming languages (e.g. .Net, SQL, C#), and information capture techniques. Familiar with methods and techniques for structured reviews,
  • Analytical Thinking – Good at acquiring an understanding of a problem or situation, and developing an approach to interacting with the situation.
    • Strategic Perspective – Needs to keep overall objectives and strategies in mind, and not be deflected by matters of detail.
    • Stress Handling - Retaining objectivity and proper understanding of a problem or situation when placed under conditions of stress
    • Applying standards – Good in application of relevant industry and process standards to all tasks undertaken.
    • Industry Developments – Must take initiative to ensure technical skills and specialisations are kept up to date in line with industry developments and ensure that all relevant skill sets are current.
