Job Purpose

  • Support the business requirements for the provision of internal applications services.
  • Deliver an effective support and maintenance service for primarily our student information system (SIS), Banner, in support of the student lifecycle, and our product catalogue and scheduling system.
  • Maintain, configure, upgrade and customise our Banner implementation along with the web service integration of Banner with other third party software within the student lifecycle system.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Support the business requirements for the provision of internal applications management services, analysing complex business problems and recommending solutions.
  • Work with outside product vendors and assist with the installation, configuration, and customization of their software products.
  • Implement application development requirements, with a constant focus on co-ordinating business efficiencies through the activities of applications development.
  • Liaise with IT infrastructure services, in support of applications maintenance and development activities.
  • Provide continual support of business processes that use one or many applications or application services through common communication channels and service desk ticketing software.
  • Maintain applications to support resilient and well performing delivery of services to multiple platforms.
  • Identify root cause of application problems, recommending paths to resolve, communicating solutions to business units, and fixing where appropriate.
  • Co-ordinate and assist each line of business with opportunities for shared applications and common business efficiencies.
  • Define, plan and manage releases of application updates.
  • Support improvement initiatives involving business applications.
  • Support the strategy for strategic, tactical and maintenance activities.
  • Take responsibility for: time management; reporting and monitoring; risk management; issue management; quality assurance and change management.
  • Act as technical expert for identified internal applications, sharing knowledge as appropriate through intranet documentation and running training sessions
  • Support other application team members and assigned resources as appropriate to the implementation of application related activities.
  • Carry out other tasks as agreed with their line manager.

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Qualifications: Degree qualified and/or relevant professional qualification and experience (e.g. MCSD, MCSE, OCP), however applications from candidates with appropriate and relevant work experience or other equivalent qualifications will also be considered.
  • Significant experience working with and supporting Banner software implementations in a project environment.
    • Student module (SSB) and INB experience required, preferably covering versions 8 and 9.
    • Workflow, ODS and Degree Works experience desired.
    • Financial Aid Module experience preferred.
    • UC4 software experience desired.
    • Must have solid understanding of database concepts and be comfortable with writing ad-hoc database queries including PL/SQL.
    • Knowledge of basic Unix/Linux commands and shell scripting.
    • Experience working with Apache, Tomcat, Oracle Application server, and/or other application servers.
    • Working knowledge of Java beneficial.
    • Familiarity with development and continuous integration tools like Eclipse, Bamboo, Maven, Ant, etc.
    • Experience with version control software such as CVS or SVN.
    • Experience with both traditional SDLC and Agile best practices.
    • Experience working on large-scale, enterprise level projects.
    • Understanding of SOA Infrastructure.
    • Working knowledge of ETL concepts, actual experience a plus.
    • Aware of industry and professional standards (e.g. ISO 9001).
  • Training: Formal training in Service Management disciplines (e.g. ITIL).
  • Skills: Familiar with application development tools (e.g. Visual Studio, Oracle Developer). Familiar with specified programming languages (e.g. .Net, SQL, C#), and information capture techniques. Familiar with methods and techniques for structured reviews.
