HEALTH & SAFETY APPRENTICE

Are you the kind of person who notices when something doesn’t feel right?
Do you ask why things are done a certain way — and how they could be done better?
We are looking for a Health and Safety Apprentice to join our Health, Safety & Facilities team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone at the start of their career or is looking for a retrain in a new profession who is interested in health and safety and wants to gain a recognised qualification, hands‑on experience, and long‑term career prospects within the health and safety profession.
You will be supported throughout your apprenticeship, working alongside experienced health and safety professionals while completing the Level 3 Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Technician Apprenticeship.
As our Health and Safety Apprentice, you will:
- Support health and safety activities across CGA offices, homes and communal areas
- Assist with inspections, audits and risk assessments
- Help maintain health and safety records and compliance documentation
- Support accident, incident and near‑miss investigations
- Assist in delivering Toolbox Talks, inductions and safety briefings
- Work with colleagues, contractors and tenants to promote safe working practices
- Learn how health and safety legislation applies within a housing association
- Play a role in promoting a positive, tenant‑focused safety culture
What we are looking for:
- A genuine interest in health and safety
- GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4 / C above (or equivalent)
- Commitment to completing learning assessments and coursework alongside your role
- Good communication, organisational and IT skills
It would be great if you also had:
- Interest in housing, construction, facilities or the built environment
- A driving licence and use of a car for work
This role suits someone who is prepared to think, ask questions and take responsibility for their own learning, not someone looking for a ‘tick‑box’ apprenticeship. You will need to show curiosity, initiative and a willingness to speak up - health and safety is about people! You will work within our Culture & Engagement Team, who sit at the heart of Community Gateway. We shape how it feels to work here by championing our values, supporting learning and wellbeing, and creating a safe, inclusive and positive working environment.
We work across the organisation to embed great behaviours, promote high standards of health and safety, and help colleagues feel confident, supported and proud of the difference they make. We ask questions, challenge constructively and work as one team to continually improve how we do things - because great services start with great culture.
Why work at Community Gateway?
We are a values-based organisation who truly care about our employees, their health, safety and wellbeing. We aim for a great employee experience and that includes offering a range of benefits – have a look at the attached leaflet for more information. Our holiday entitlement starts at 26 days plus bank holidays (including your birthday off and Christmas closure!).
We also offer a great pension scheme where CGA will pay in contributions up to 10%, a company-paid health cash plan for you and your dependants (including 24/7 GP), enhanced sick pay and parental leave, reward and recognition scheme, wellbeing support, training and development and much more.
Inclusion is key for us. We would love to hear from people from diverse backgrounds for this role, those who may be underrepresented in our organisation. We aim to be reflective of the communities in which we operate and if you speak a second language this can come in handy!

This role is based at our gorgeous dock-front offices in Preston. You will also regularly visit our other locations across the city.
