GRAHAM ACADEMY – CIVIL ENGINEER

Civil Engineering is one of the main divisions within GRAHAM Construction. Operating throughout the UK and Ireland, we pride ourselves in delivering value for money and innovative solutions for our clients.

• Tennison Road Bridge Replacement for Network Rail
• The A138 Chelmer Viaduct for Highways England
• Gladstone Biomass Facility in Liverpool
• M80 Stepps to Haggs project in central Scotland
• The iconic Samuel Beckett Bridge in Dublin
• M1/M2/Westlink upgrades in Belfast.
• The LLWR nuclear facility

As a forward thinking organisation, we are actively involved in new energy markets such as wind, energy from waste, biomass and hydro, as well as the nuclear decommissioning market.


What does a Civil Engineer do?

Civil engineers are creative people who solve problems. They come up with ideas and then turn them into real things for people around the world to use.

A Civil Engineer will

• Ensure Health, Safety and Environmental requirements are adhered to.
• Undertake Surveying and setting out duties.
• Plan the work and efficiently organise site operations in order to meet an agreed programme of deadlines.
• Liaise with any consultants and sub-contracts engaged in the project as necessary.
• Resolve any unexpected technical difficulties and other problems that may arise.
• Undertake the testing and calibration of instruments used.
• Fully interact with other members of the construction site team.
• Introduce improvements and innovation where appropriate to areas of responsibility.

GRADUATES

We offer a two year programme which focuses on developing your technical and interpersonal skills. In addition, a structured, mentored training programme, aligned to a recognised professional qualification, will set you on the pathway to chartership. Through early responsibility you’ll learn quickly on challenging projects with the opportunity for fast track career advancement.

INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENTS

Our industrial placements can last from 3-12 months, dependent on your college/university curriculum.   On your placement you will be given the support, guidance and experience which will lay the foundations for a great future in Civil Engineering. This includes a structured learning programme and experience in a variety of Civil Engineering environments.  Show us what you can do and your placement could lead to a company scholarship award and an offer of employment when you graduate.

TECHNICAL APPRENTICESHIPS

Technical apprenticeships are available at a number of entry points from GCSE, A Level or BTEC awards.

In general all technical apprenticeship levels include paid work experience with off the job learning at a college/university on a day release basis.  Technical apprentices develop on the job skills and gain wide-ranging construction knowledge and can naturally progress through the levels towards degree achievement.  Our structured technical apprenticeship programmes will also be your first step towards membership of a professional body which can lead to rewarding careers within Civil Engineering.
