N Brown PLC has a new Data Division focussed on exploiting the Data Science capability for the group and we are on the lookout for a Lead Operations Data Scientist. You will be an expert Data Scientist who will help to elevate our Data Science capability by taking responsibility for managing our extensive portfolio of algorithms. We are building a world class team and infrastructure and the role of Lead Operations Data Scientist is a key requirement for success.

Your role

  • Develop the appropriate infrastructure to manage a range of models and segmentation with an in-depth understanding of business use of these applications
  • Develop the appropriate performance monitoring process (model stability)
  • Own algorithm management: re-calibration, re-modelling, decommissioning
  • Own the data quality monitoring process (variable stability)
  • Own Model Variable Bank Optimisation – to define what the optimal 500 features are
  • Collaborate with Technology on the automation and frequency of update of algorithms and MVB
  • Manage transition of models from 3rd parties
  • Collaborate closely with Technology and the Data Science leads to consider the following in the context of our new Data Science model:
    • Establishing and monitoring data flows into Data Science platform
    • Individual budget responsibility
    • Data minimisation and deletion
    • Traceability and version control of datasets
  • Apply expertise in data preparation and statistics and machine learning
  • Prioritise problems that have the most value to the organisation
  • Collaborate closely with Data Scientists and Analytics Translators
  • Manage Data Science toolkit and platform
  • Generate energy, pride and momentum in the team to raise our game to world class, with the team acting as an internal consultancy
  • Any other duties required by the line manager that are appropriate with the post, grade and level of responsibility of this role, for which the role holder has the necessary experience and/or training

What you need to succeed

  • Academically strong you’re likely to have an MSc or PHD in natural sciences, psychology, physics, mathematics or statistics
  • Proven track record in a senior analytical role, ideally with experience in a role assisting in digital retail environment
  • A Data Science expert
  • Experience of management
  • Ability to think outside the box and challenge existing processes and practices
  • Ability to harness “big data” / large data sets
  • SQL / SAS / R / Python or any other programming experience
  • Good communication skills with an ability to convey and visualise analysis / insight clearly
  • An open-minded, flexible and positive attitude toward new challenges, with a willingness to embrace new technologies and business change
  • Problem-solving skills with the ability to work under pressure
  • An expert understanding of the techniques and technologies of Data Science, along with a thoroughly detailed understanding of the challenges associated with each (e.g. overfitting, model refresh, challenge of acquiring training data, cost of compute, etc.)
