Here at N Brown we are now recruiting a Technical Lead who will be tasked with providing end-to-end Senior Technical Leadership to the relevant squad(s) whilst contributing to the strategy and build of the wider Engineering practice in BIT.

We are looking for someone with complete technical proficiency in Java development with extensive experience designing and building Microservices. Additionally, a track-record of leading, mentoring and coaching a team of Engineers, empowering them to use modern development standards, technologies and best practice techniques. 

Initially this role will focus on the roll out of a new Content Management System (CMS) for the web sites including wrapping in an API to decouple the solution from the front end. Going forward the squads will then move to vertical, full stack, feature squads. 


Core Activities as Technical Lead:  

  • Lead squad code development in an Agile delivery structure, influencing wider development standards 
  • Work closely with all squad members including Product OwnerScrum Master, developers and testers to ensure best practice development 
  • Lead Agile ceremonies - two-week sprint planningshow and tells, retrospectives and delivery, contributing to optimizing the squad’s way of working  
  • Owner of code quality for all deliverables including the management and tracking of technical debt of all systems owned by the squad. 
  • Owner of the Continuous Integration/Continuous delivery pipeline 
  • Work with the wider Engineering leadership team to transform squads into a DevOps model  
  • Proactively resolve technical issues within the squad and other squads whilst looking for continuous improvement opportunities from an operational process perspective  
  • Liaise with guild of other squad Tech Leads to ensure a standardized vision and approach to engineering across all squads within BIT  
  • Line manage squad developers, coach in best practices 


What are we looking for?

  • AWS, in particular Java 8 or newer, microservices, Docker, J2EE, Spring Boot, containerisation, Reactjs, common design principles including SOLID 
  • Experience of using a Content Management System (CMS), for example Strapi, is advantageous 
  • Continuous Integration using Jenkins and/or Gitlab including the Release Pipeline and quality process 
  • Experience building API gateways and microservice based system architecture 
  • Able to maintain the highest standard of code quality, unit tests, code coverage – SonarQube or similar 
  • Experience in working in an Agile environment with continuous delivery. Understand how the squad-model operates  
  • Experience working in or building a scalable DevOps environment. Able to proactively assist team with this transformation and change  
  • Excellent communicator with ability to articulate complex and technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences  
  • Passionate about creating a future-fit, engineering practice and growing our technology and people capability accordingly 
  • Influential team leader with experience in coaching and mentoring both around technical and behavioural skills
