The Data Architect will play a pivotal role in shaping and guiding the technology roadmap for data capabilities within N Brown. Driving transformation of our data capability is at the heart of our business strategy, as such we have huge plans to expand and improve our capability into a class leading proposition. As Data Architect you will be in key to the success of this exciting but challenging journey!

You will be a trusted advisor for key stakeholders in our Data Engineering, Data Science and Data Analytics communities and corresponding technical teams, as well as the wider IT and Business leadership teams. You will be responsible for the creation of quality designs that are in line with our overall strategy, ensuring that such designs are understandable, implementable and can be supported in a sustainable way.

As Data Architect you will be responsible for:



  • Support Enterprise Architects in the definition and maintenance of roadmaps, providing input into strategic technology direction;
  • The creation and maintenance of robust and consistent data-specific architecture principles, standards and artefacts
  • The creation and governance of conceptual and logical solution designs.
  • Responsible for the representation of Data stake holders at Technical governance forum.


Data and Capability Squads

  • Evaluation of and influence over the structure of data for the whole organisation, ensuring integrated data across the business.
  • Aligning with Data Analytics to define: BI reporting approach, Data Migration needs including ETL approach and Clarification and standardisation of business rule management
  • Supporting and developing the right approach towards a goal of ‘single sources of truth’ for all data.
  • Data store definition – topology modelling, federation modelling, performance modelling.
  • Supporting both the development and creation of standard methods for modelling data (conceptual, logical, object, document etc)


Data Science and Analytics

  • Supporting the Data Science team with the definition, population and build of our data lake, and the Analytics team with the data warehouse
  • Aligning with the Data Science roadmap, ensuring alignment with IT Data Squads and supporting allocation of resource.
  • Working closely with ML Engineers during definition of Data Science Projects, reviewing feasibility and potential designs and opportunities.


What experience are we looking for?

  • Have great experience in data architecture or similar lead technology role, applying industry-recognised data modelling patterns and standards to diverse data sets
  • Be excellent at conceptual & rational data modelling and database design
  • Be passionate about building high quality data and governance structures
  • Know how to interpret a Data Science and Analytics roadmap and turn business problems into data designs
  • Understand how to deploy data in support of complex machine learning projects
  • Be able to demonstrate an innovative, dynamic and creative approach to problem-solving
  • Can identify opportunities and support others sensitively through organisational and technology change
  • Have a growth mindset, taking advantage of learning opportunities to help N Brown become an industry trailblazer


Key Software and Technology Capabilities


  • Cloud fundamentals – preferably AWS S3, IAM, EC2, Cloudwatch etc.
  • Experience with other AWS technologies such as: EMR, Glue, DynamoDB, Athena, Lake Formation, Redshift, Sagemaker, Lambda
  • Teradata EDW
  • Airflow
  • PowerBI
