The role of a First Line Risk Manager is to support the delivery and embedding of the Enterprise Risk Management Framework within Financial Services; ensuing a robust control framework is in place by undertaking appropriate Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA), helping the business maintain appropriate risk maturity levels; and that risks are being managed in line with Board risk appetite. The role will also co-ordinate the businesses response and management to incidents, issues and appropriate treatment plans.

As part of the First Line Risk Team, the Risk Manager provides advice and guidance to their allocated Financial Services business area on appropriate risk matters and are responsible for ensuring that risk reporting is adequate, and escalation of material risks and issues through the relevant FS governance committees

What you’ll be responsible for as a First Line Risk Manager:

  • You will assist in the identification, assessment, and monitoring material risks regularly, and ensure that appropriate action plans are in place (where required) to ensure risks are fully mitigated.
  • You’ll undertake key control testing with the business to determine the effectiveness of business controls’ design and performance, and they support the delivery of Financial Services strategic objectives and targets.
  • Working with key stakeholders, control and risk owners you will ensure that controls are compliant, fit for purpose and action plans are in place for controls outside of appetite.
  • Proactively advocate risk and governance across FS and engagement amongst colleagues and other business functions.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  
  • Assist in the production of risk MI, presenting key themes, tracking progress and actions plans to ensure risks are being managed within risk appetite.
  • Review effeteness and adherence to the Group’s Risk Management Framework, processes and policies by supporting FS in completing controls testing and conducting risk and control self-assessment (RCSA).
  • You will assist in emerging external and internal risk related issues and ensure that the appropriate actions are taken to manage these.
  • Oversee and support any second line risk and compliance or internal audit reviews within FS, ensuing that where findings have been identified, appropriate action plans are in place and are being managed through to completion and within agreed timescales.
  • Support and deliver risk management training and continuing to promote a risk awareness culture.
  • Any changes being made within FS, ensure that any material changes are appropriately risk assessed, tested and recorded appropriately. 
  • Act as a SME within FS for incidents and issues, lead the co-ordination (where required) any root cause analysis activity and provide support at incident meetings.
  • Continue to drive risk ownership and accountability across the FS Business Areas.
  • Support the embedding of the Enterprise Risk Management Framework, and its associated risk policies and procedures, into the FS Business Areas.

What you will need to succeed as a First Line Risk Manager:

  • Experience of working in a first line or second line risk and compliance function within Financial Services is essential, including knowledge of delivering risk management frameworks and conducting/ co-ordinating risk and control self-assessment.
  • Practical first line experience working in an FCA regulated business, ideally with a consumer lending element to that business.
  • A good level of technical awareness and understanding of conduct risk, particularly in the delivery of fair customer outcomes.
  • Understanding of the regulatory environment, including the FCA customer and conduct expectations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and explain risk management techniques and processes using language relevant to FS.
  • Resilient and determined to support the business improve the effectiveness and efficiency of risk management and controls.
  • Ability to diagnose and articulate material weaknesses in key controls and to identify proportionate and pragmatic solutions.
  • Strong relationship and stakeholder management skills with proven ability to influence at Senior Manager and Director level is key for the individuals to be successful in the role.
  • Good technical skills, able to interpret and use data, analytics & MI for decision making and reporting upwards and outwards.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills at all levels, with the ability to translate complex or technical issues.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in risk management and compliance.
