Here at N Brown we are looking to recruit an Art Director to join our Studio, here in the centre of Manchester. You will lead and deliver trailblazing visual fashion shoot concepts into the execution of photographic excellence, through expert art direction to brief. Your role spans across editorial campaigns, homepage content, social media, video and more, including model shoots and still life, in studio and on location, in the UK and abroad.


We’re looking for an expert in art direction for menswear or womenswear, you will be working on one of our core brands – Jacamo, Simply Be, JD Williams or Ambrose Wilson to deliver first class art direction - although some flexibility across brands and categories may be required. The team have a adopted a flexible approach to working remotely and from the office, as shoots will be between London and Manchester.

Your role as Art Director:

  • Lead and deliver trailblazing visual shoot concepts into the execution of photographic excellence through expert art direction. Aligning all photographic teams to a vision, from ideation to planning, shooting, image selection and final presentation.
  • Execute highly aspirational aesthetics that have an instant positive impact on our current/future customers and exceed the output of our competitors - driving brand engagement, credibility and sales optimisation.
  • Accountability of all final editorial photographic output for your brand, spanning full end to end process - interpretation and shoot ideation of Brand/Trading briefs through to final photographic outcome. Working to very tight deadlines and delivering on time and within budget.  Inspiring and motivating the team to be creatively progressive through storytelling and the application and deliverance of fresh, inventive and highly aspirational photographic results.
  • Excite and deliver super clear direction when articulating shoot concept and on-shoot direction to all internal and external stakeholders. Management of shoot flow and timings to ensure all assets are achieved on brief and to KPI etc, including delivery of final playback/presentation.
  • Build a team of highly credible and capable freelance talent and manage prior to shoot/on set to deliver against/ exceed the brief and to drive photographic excellence. Know how to get the best out of the talent and teams.
  • Create and evolve a market leading model board that drives the credibility and strategic viewpoint of your brand to the highest level.
  • Foster close working relationships with Brand, Design, Trading, Buying, Creative and Studio Teams, amongst others.


What experience and skills will you need?

  • Significant proven art direction experience with strong portfolio to demonstrate visual results of your work.
  • Excellent knowledge of, and proven track record in, all the constituent elements of photographic art direction, creative and image production, including lighting. Excellent knowledge of fashion, styling, photographic and cultural trends – able to generate a continual supply of original ideas and visual concepts.
  • Strong commercial sense to deliver trailblazing results in a relatable way. Able to critique in a clear and respectful way and receive and action critique yourself in an open and collaborative way.
  • Excellent leadership skills and strong interpersonal, communication and motivational skills, working well with diverse teams.
  • Must be excited by creative challenges, and able to work under pressure in very fast-paced environments.
  • Experience of working in the UK and abroad, in studio and on location preferred.
  • Flexible and positive attitude with the ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and ways of working, including strong problem-solving skills. Time management and able to determine where best to invest your creative energy for maximum commercial results.
  • Able to present work in a highly inspiring way to engage internal and external stakeholders.
  • Confidence to explain and support your thinking to stakeholders and relate all concepts back succinctly to be on/exceed brief. Also, a flexible approach and willingness to adapt your ideas to feedback needs.
  • Knowledge of typography, image manipulation, illustration and animation preferred.
