Working with the Group Financial Controller, you will be responsible for all matters related to Tax and Treasury. You will ensure the Group has adequate financing arrangements to support its commercial activities; operates within the Board approved policies and risk appetite for cash, fx, credit, interest rate exposure and tax planning and compliance; operates a Group structure fit for purpose.


What you’ll be responsible for as the Head of Tax and Treasury:

  • Develop and deliver the Tax & Treasury strategy in line with the Board approved policy and risk appetite
  • Lead third party relationships with the Banks; HMRC; Other professional advisors relating to tax and treasury and the external auditors
  • Design and Implement best practice Treasury practices for the day to day operations of the Group
  • Ensure adequate financing to meet the Group’s corporate central requirements by overseeing and implementing the respective debt funding arrangements
  • Take prime responsibility for ensuring the Group remains in compliance with its banking covenants
  • Lead on financial instrument placements for hedging fx and interest rate risks, working alongside Group Finance to ensure relevant hedging documentation is in place
  • Identify and assess needs for a Treasury Management tool to monitor the Group’s cash position
  • Partner with the business and provide advice to ensure tax and treasury risks are considered and understood in relation to its commercial activities
  • Ensure close collaboration with the Financial Services Finance teams on the securitisation facility and all VAT related matters including Partial Exemption and Bad Debt relief methodologies
  • Maintain and develop an open and effective working relationship with HMRC
  • Lead on negotiations with regards to Partial Exemption, VAT Bad Debt Relief, and retail scheme calculations
  • Create oversight over accurate tax cash flow budgeting and forecasting
  • Maintain the Group’s tax governance and control processes including updating the Tax Strategy, Risk Register and SAO processes
  • Lead on the timely and accurate submission of quarterly UK VAT returns; the annual Corporation Tax returns and instalment payments; the overseas Corporation Tax and VAT returns
  • Review and oversee the calculation of the current and deferred tax charge and provide the tax disclosures for the Group’s financial statements (under IFRS)
  • Monitor, review and update the Group’s transfer pricing documentation and processes to ensure compliance across the Group
  • Work closely with CoSec and Group Finance to review the Group structure and open/close legal entities as appropriate


What you will need to succeed: 

  • Lead and develop the team to instil operational excellence to drive value and best practice
  • The ability to build effective relationships at all levels
  • A self-starter, passionate about the business, a strong collaborator and communicator
  • Experience to Group tax planning scenarios either directly as a manager or part of a team
  • Strong knowledge of relevant Corporation Tax and VAT issues
  • Experience with the preparation of complex Corporation Tax and VAT returns
  • Knowledge and experience of Partial Exemption and VAT Bad Debt Relief desirable but not essential
  • Experience of tax accounting for consolidated groups (preferably under IFRS)
  • Expertise in external financing and funding, risk and working capital management desirable but not essential
  • Experience in the management of professional relationships with at least some of the following external stakeholders; Tax and Treasury advisors, HMRC and bankers
  • High level of skill and accuracy around data and the production of correspondence and documentation
  • Ideally hold a recognised Treasury (ACA or ACMT) and/or Tax professional accreditation
  • A proactive and enquiring mind; constantly considering new ideas and solutions. Appreciate own position and contribution of the tax and treasury function to the wider organisation
