Do you take pride in helping students learn? Do you want to work with engaged and motivated young people? Can you inspire the minds of our pupils in the literacy remit? If you answered yes to all of the above, read on!

Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School are seeking to appoint a Library Manager who will be responsible for all aspects of library work, including providing support to the Data Manager as required. Amongst other duties, the position involves supporting the school’s focus on developing literacy skills (especially reading), teaching library skills to pupils and overseeing the use, storage and security of library equipment. No previous experience as a librarian is required.

The school library is a unique and specialist part of an academy as it fundamentally supports students’ learning and their development to be effective, independent learners and readers. The role will complement the hard work of our dedicated staff - both in teaching roles and support roles. The position is ideal for an English graduate as it will draw on your genuine passion for literature, or perhaps an experienced Learning Mentor/Teaching Assistant who has experience working with secondary-aged pupils, as you will have a solid understanding of the impact that written resources can have on students' learning.

The successful candidate will be:

  • a partner with teaching staff in the education process
  • an ‘expert’ in resource and information collation
  • a leader and partner with teaching staff in the collaborative design and implementation of information literacy programs throughout the academy
  • a leader in creating and developing a climate to promote and support reading for pleasure across the academy
  • an acknowledged partner with all departments to effectively support and resource each key stage

Skills, knowledge and qualifications:

  • Ideally, our successful candidate will be a graduate with an English-based degree
  • Meticulous and precise in their work of ordering, recording and caring for resources
  • Friendly and customer-oriented for the outward-facing parts of their job
  • Passionate about reading and well-read and up-to-date both in digital and print publishing
  • Adaptable and aware of current and emerging technologies

The working basis of the role is 37 hours per week, Term Time only, offering an actual salary of £17,718 - £20,114 per annum (£21,189 - £24,054 full-time equivalent), commensurate with experience.

Working with us: Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School was founded in 1701 in order to provide an education to young men who would go on to work at the famous Chatham Dockyard. More than 300 years later we still pride ourselves on providing a superb academic education alongside an unparalleled range of opportunities for personal growth and character development. Awarded ‘outstanding’ in our last Ofsted, the comment that stands out to us is,  “students thrive within its distinctive ethos, enabling them to succeed academically and to develop into confident, well-rounded individuals who are prepared extremely well for their future lives.”
