About us

The LGA is the national membership body for local authorities and we work on behalf of our member councils to support, promote and improve local government.

The role
This role will lead the LGA’s work responding to Covid-19. Reporting directly to the Head of Policy (People), the successful candidate will be a member of our Corporate Leadership Team and act as the LGA’s Principal Policy Advisor on Covid-19 issues, drawing on expertise from across the LGA and wider local government.

This is a senior role drawing together work from various teams within the LGA on Covid-19 and leading our collective response to the many workstreams led out of Whitehall on these issues. The work is unpredictable and fast moving but will make a huge difference for our member councils by ensuring the LGA makes the most effective interventions with officials and Ministers and supports council officers and members as effectively as possible.

The requirements
You will have the experience and credibility to lead the conversation with government and with national organisations from across the public, private, and voluntary sectors. We need someone who can work with experts inside and outside the organisation, develop and rapidly adapt evidence-based policy positions and advocate councils’ views to show that local government can make a difference.
The role provides a chance to raise your profile on a national stage on the most important issue facing the nation. You will be leading the team responsible for our work on Covid-19, working with policy leads across the policy directorate, and our Chairman and Group Leaders as well as the councillors leading our Community Wellbeing Board.
You’ll set and evolve our strategic positioning on the full range of Covid-19 issues based on feedback from councils and good understanding of how best to work with government to secure the changes we need to see.
This role aims to strengthen the LGA’s work to support councils and work with government during the pandemic. We are looking for someone to start as soon as possible, and it is a full time (or job share) role.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Sally Burlington (07920 061204).

Closing date: 5pm, Sunday 29th November

Interview date: Week commencing 7th December
