About us

The Local Government Association speaks with one voice on behalf of local government in England and Wales. Made up of elected representatives from all the different political parties, we aim to set the political agenda and have our say in the national media on the issues that matter to council members. There has never been a more exciting time to work for us.

The role

Can you make a difference to people's lives by helping local government to prevent and relieve homelessness and keep residents safe?

The post will focus primarily on homelessness and rough sleeping policy and aim to help local government secure the powers and funding required to deliver the best possible services for those in need. Often in the media spotlight, this is a key area of interest for councils. The COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the strength of the emergency response with councils working with partners to provide safe accommodation for more than 29,000 rough sleepers and other vulnerable people.

Your work will include supporting councils as we move into the next phases of the COVID-19 response, to ensure that the gains that have been made in supporting people are not just emergency responses, but a new normal. Drawing on the experience of our member councils you will assess the implications of different policy options and develop proposals that help to support and improve local government. You will need to be a problem-solver and capable of taking a strategic and forward-thinking approach to advocate on behalf of the LGA.

The post will also include responsibility for developing the LGA’s resident engagement work and helping councils to prepare for their new duty-holder roles in respect of higher risk residential buildings under the Building Safety Bill. The successful candidate will also act as the secretariat for an adviser network.

Our policy team works closely with colleagues in media & public affairs and the LGA’s political group offices, as well as with external partners and central government.

The requirements

We are looking for an effective team player with excellent organisational and people skills. Ideally you will have a good knowledge and understanding of local government and homelessness. Candidates will need to be able to prioritise competing demands, delivering to deadlines in an environment that can change rapidly.

Typically, we would expect candidates to have experience that demonstrates a track record of making a difference in a political context.

You will be working alongside national partners including relevant Government departments and national officer associations and will need to excel in relationship building and joint delivery of projects, as well as being able to engage directly with local authorities and offer bespoke support where required.

Knowledge of the specific policy areas referred to above may be an advantage, but it is not a necessity for candidates who can demonstrate their ability to quickly grasp new and diverse policy areas.
