About us

We are a politically led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We aim to influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils, so they are able to deliver local solutions to national problems.

The role

The Finance Improvement Programme works with councils to help address financial challenges, support improvement in financial governance, leadership and management.

As financial challenges in local government continue to grow, the LGA is looking to expand the scope of the programme.

The role involves supporting the development, commissioning and delivery of the finance improvement programme for 2022/23, working with our regional teams and other stakeholders to ensure that suitable packages of improvement are targeted where they are most needed.

As we encourage flexible working at the LGA, we are happy to discuss the option of a home-based contract. The salary for a home-based worker is from £66,120 pa or office-based from £69,832 pa (including London Weighting). The office-based working will be in line with our transitional flexible working policy as we begin to go back into the office again following COVID-19.

The requirements

The successful candidate will have a track record of delivering projects and programmes at pace, knowledge of local government in England and how it operates and an understanding and interest in financial governance, leadership and management, preferably as it relates to councils, and how these can be improved.  The candidate will work as part of a small team overseen by the Principal Adviser – Finance.
