The Role

Liverpool City Council is looking to recruit a Policy Officer to provide support in decision making and communications to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities appointed Commissioner Team, whilst maintaining high levels of confidentiality and discretion.

The role will provide dedicated support for the four Commissioners, Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff appointed by Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities to work with Liverpool City Council. The post holder will be based within the Policy and Intelligence Team in the Office of the Chief Executive and may be required to provide other duties as required subject to the needs of the council and the Commissioner Team.

Applicants will need to have experience of working in a policy environment and of analysing legislation to inform policy development in order to be considered for this position. A good understanding of UK political institutions and the process of government is essential.

The successful candidate will have good team work and management skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an understanding of how to tailor messaging to different audiences, and a proactive attitude. The role will require the ability to synthesise complex or lengthy information at speed, draw strategic links and prioritise work.

The ideal candidate will come from a policy or similar background and will have a proven track record of being highly effective and rigorously organised with a strong attention to detail. Well-developed ICT skills and an understanding of and ability to maintain high-levels of confidentiality will be vital to the role.

This post is fixed term for 18 months to support the Commissioners as a result of the Best Value Inspection recommendations. The role is 35 hours per week Monday – Friday and will be based in the Cunard Building, Water Street, Liverpool. This is primarily an office based role. The post will be subject to the Official Secrets Act.
