About Us

The Local Government Association (LGA) is the national membership body for local authorities. We work on behalf of our member councils to support, promote and improve local government.

We are a politically-led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils to help them deliver local solutions to national problems.

We also provide councils with the tools and resources to respond to challenges present and emerging, and support improvement across the sector.

The role

We are looking to recruit to the position of Head of Public Affairs and Stakeholder Engagement. This is a unique opportunity to play a leading role campaigning on behalf of local government at a national level. This is a high-profile role in the organisation, supporting the LGA Chairman, Chief Executive and other senior LGA leaders.

As we encourage flexible working at the LGA, we are happy to discuss the option of a home-based contract. The office-based working will be in line with our flexible working policy. Please note however that that this requires regular travel to work in Parliament.

Although this role is full-time, we will consider applicants interested in working part-time, please reference this in your application.

The requirements

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate experience of having managed public affairs and stakeholder engagement activity in a fast-paced political environment, with the ability to deliver projects under pressure and against competing tight deadlines. An Understanding of Westminster, Whitehall and local government, including the interface between local authorities, national government, political parties and opinion formers will also be required.

The successful candidate will also need strong awareness of media (digital, print and broadcast) and presentational issues, and have the ability to work with politicians to shape and project credible public positions.

The successful candidate will need to have experience of working as part of a wider team and line managing their own team and be someone who can influence a culture of collaborative and constructive working that helps to develop good working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, both internally and externally.
