About the role
We are looking for an experienced HR professional to support across the breadth of our growing graduate programmes offer. The LGA currently runs three graduate programmes – the National Graduate Development Programme (NGDP), NGDP Finance and Pathways to Planning, all with the joint aim of kickstarting meaningful careers in the sector. As the HR Advisor you will play a key role in this as the HR expert, to advise, guide and support the design and delivery of all aspects of these programmes, from recruitment through to graduates leaving the programme. You will be central to helping provide the best experience for individual graduate trainees at a pivotal stage of their career, along with supporting host councils to align with best practice and process. This will include managing HR matters that arise throughout the recruitment and employment process.
About you
The successful candidate will have a broad range of HR experience and expertise, underpinned by a CIPD qualification and up to date knowledge of best practice and legislation. Ideally, you will have experience in working with and supporting employees at the start of their careers and a strong focus on promoting equality, diversity and inclusion.
We’re looking for someone equally comfortable working as part of a team, advising and supporting colleagues to ensure our processes reflect best practice, and working with autonomy, especially when advising on complex HR matters. The ability to deal sensitively with a broad range of stakeholders is essential.
You must have the right to work in the UK, the LGA are unfortunately unable to offer sponsorship visas. Evidence for the right to work in the UK will be requested at the interview stage.

We are specifically assessing candidates against the following criteria:
- CIPD Level 5 accredited qualification or equivalent
- Experience of providing HR advice to stakeholders across the full breadth of HR areas including applying experience and judgment to non-standard and complex employee relations cases
- Excellent interpersonal, influencing and communication skills, with the ability to deal with a range of stakeholders with courtesy, tact and sensitivity in order to deal with issues which are often sensitive and/or confidential.
- Experience of applying insights from day to day work to help shape business/organisation strategy.
- An excellent understanding of current trends and best practice in graduate recruitment and employee experience
