Independent members will receive a fixed annual allowance of £300 per annum, which will be paid on a quarterly basis, plus an additional payment of £100 per meeting that they attend, and their travelling and subsistence expenses are paid.


About the role:

West Suffolk Council is seeking Independent non-voting Members to join its Performance and Audit Scrutiny Committee responsible for overseeing effective governance, performance management, risk management, internal controls, treasury management and financial reporting.

The committee is looking for local people with an interest in finance, audit and governance to enhance the Performance and Audit Scrutiny Committee’s work on behalf of the people of West Suffolk. It is an interesting role that would require you to provide challenge within the council’s policy framework as well as learning about the systems and processes that support the broad and complex range of council services especially the financial, performance and risk management of those services.  The terms of reference for the Performance and Audit Scrutiny Committee can be found in the Council's Constitution along with Committee agendas which are published on our website.

The committee meets at least four times a year in the evening, with the possibility of occasional special meetings appointed by the committee. These meetings, which usually last approximately two hours, will normally be held at West Suffolk House in Bury St Edmunds. There is a requirement in between meetings to read agendas and related papers. The Independent Members will also be asked to attend training which is relevant to their role. The appointment will be for a four-year term of office commencing in November 2024 and expiring in October 2028.

Additional requirements

You must not be disqualified from serving as a co-opted member of West Suffolk Council or be a councillor with West Suffolk Council, or any other principal council or have served as a councillor in the 5 years prior to this appointment. You should also be impartial and have no connection with any political party or group. It is essential that your role is and is seen to be independent.
