The Local Government Association is a cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We aim to influence and set the political agenda and support member councils across England and Wales in the delivery of local services and addressing the challenges they face.

Working at the heart of local government, you’ll use your HR expertise to help councils ensure we have a workforce that’s fit for the 21st century. That means gaining a thorough understanding of the current political and economic situation and its impact on the needs and expectations of the workforce. You’ll also help local authority employers to meet and manage new challenges in workforce management.

With impact across the local government sector, this is a uniquely influential role. A strategic innovator, skilled negotiator and highly adept communicator, you’ll spot trends and develop new solutions to meet councils’ fast-changing priorities. Success depends on your ability to influence workforce policy and legislation at national level while interpreting it – and often assisting in its implementation - at a local level.

Making change happen on this scale means the ability to inspire trust, enable innovation and win credibility. Possessing keen insight into political sensitivities, and a good knowledge of employee relations, you’ll have the ability to liaise effectively across the political spectrum and with trade unions. Your senior-level HR or workforce experience will be matched by a sound understanding of local and central government organisations.

Play a key role in supporting a fast-evolving sector.
