About us

The Local Government Association represents local government in England and Wales. The LGA aims to set the political agenda and have a say in the national media on the issues that matter to council members.

The LGA Labour Group, as one of the political group offices at the LGA, represents Labour councillors, providing a strong voice within the cross-party LGA and with the Labour Party at Westminster.

The role
The Labour Group Office seeks to provide wide-ranging and active support to Labour councillors.You would work within a small team of four, which also includes two Political Advisers and a Head of Group Office. The Labour Group office works to support Labour councillors by:

• Supporting the Labour Group Leadership team and Labour councillors on boards and in roles at the LGA
• Maintaining strong working relations with the Parliamentary Labour Party, Labour Party Head Office and the wider Labour movement including trade unions and affiliated groups.
• Running events, meetings and workshops for Labour councillors across the country.
• Regular communications and publications for Labour councillors to share ideas and best practice.
• Coordinating improvement and innovation work in Labour councils through peer support and mentoring

The Political Administrator post will support the effective work of the Labour Group Office by:

• Providing administrative support including diary management of the Group Leader, coordinating Labour councillors taking part in peer support work, and organising and supporting meetings, events and functions
• Maintaining and continuously improving administrative systems, including forward/project plans, electronic filing systems, CRM mailing lists and databases.
• Preparing correspondence and other documents and arranging their distribution.
• Monitoring expenditure against budgets and keeping service records and inventories.
• Liaising with councillors and local authorities and acting as a first point of contact for enquiries. Responding to or referring enquiries as appropriate and prioritising and monitoring incoming emails, post and phone calls.
• Providing support and contributing to projects within the LGA as required.

The requirements
A helpful and positive can-do attitude is essential to the role, as is the ability to establish good working relationships with others both internally and externally. You will have excellent proven organisational skills and plenty of initiative. You’ll also be a proficient IT user and will have an excellent command of written and spoken English. Candidates should be able to demonstrate understanding and empathy with the aims and objectives of the Labour Party.

The LGA is currently based in Layden House, Farringdon (zone 1), but will be moving back to 18 Smith Square, Westminster once refurbishment is complete in Autumn 2017.
