Can you make a difference to peoples’ lives by helping councils to create safer and stronger communities for their residents?

The role
You’ll use your political awareness and policy making skills to shape policy that helps local government deliver the best possible services for local residents. Drawing on the experience of our member councils, you’ll be able to assess the implications of different policy options and develop policy proposals that help to support and improve local government. Your excellent communication skills will ensure you use reports, the media and other tools to advocate on behalf of the LGA and its members.

Our policy team works closely with colleagues in media & public affairs and the LGA’s political groups, as well as with external partners and central government. The team provides policy support across the full range of local government services and advisers may be asked to support one or more different policy area. However, the post being advertised is a fixed term contract that will focus exclusively on a a range of community safety issues. 

The requirements
You will have the knowledge, experience and credibility to engage with government and organisations from across the public, private, and voluntary sectors. Able to take a strategic and forward thinking approach, you will have political and campaigning experience and a track record of making a difference.

The person we offer this post to will be an excellent communicator, problem-solver and team player. You will have experience in using a range of communication tools, including social media, as well as more traditional methods.

Candidates with a background in community safety would be particularly welcome, although previous experience in these areas is not a necessity for candidates who can demonstrate their ability to quickly grasp new and diverse policy areas.

The LGA is currently based in Layden House, Farringdon (zone 1), but will be moving back to 18 Smith Square, Westminster once refurbishment is complete in autumn 2017.
