Please read before applying
The Local Government Association’s (LGA) ngdp support team are hosting the application link for Watford Borough council’s local campaign for the national graduate development programme (ngdp). The ngdp support team will invite successful candidates to each stage of the ngdp recruitment process including online tests, video link and assessment centres and will refer those that are successful at stage 3 for an interview with the council.
The LGA and Watford Borough Council will review your application in partnership and the Watford Borough Council will be responsible for shortlisting your application against the set criteria, whilst the LGA ensure that you have met the boundaries for the ngdp test & assessments during the recruitment process.
Your local application will progress in the same timeframe as the ngdp’s national campaign and you will be assessed alongside national candidates. The ngdp facilitates the assessment of all nominated local candidates in line with national candidates to ensure they meet the same standard. Successful candidates will become part of the national cohort with access to ngdp learning and development, networks and knowledge events, but will be exclusively interviewed by their chosen council as a successful local candidate.
Watford is an ambitious council that thinks big and lives up to its motto of being bold. We have achieved a significant amount of success over the last decade, including attracting over £1 billion of investment into the town, transforming our town centre and renewing our commercial business district; but, we want to do more!
For the very first time, Watford Borough Council are providing an opportunity for local Graduates to apply to become a National Management Trainee on the National Graduate Development Programme (NGDP) run by the Local Government Association (LGA).
This unique opportunity is for committed graduates who live, work or study within the local borough to make a positive impact in Watford.
Graduates will be employed by Watford Borough Council and work in different departments throughout the programme, where they will be encouraged to challenge, innovate and improve our services.

Watford Borough Council offers a salary of £25,295 per annum.
All Graduates will attend a structured induction programme and receive on-going support including the allocation of a consistent line manager, host managers for each of their placements; they will also be assigned a mentor.
In line with NGDP requirements, Graduates will be working consistently with Head of Service areas across the Council, on a range of key strategic and important operational projects that will help make Watford a great place to live and work – Graduates will immediately be able to see how the work they engage in is helping to achieve this.
Watford Borough Council aims to reflect the diverse community that we serve and supports the NDGP’s goal to recruit Graduates from all different backgrounds, universities and degree disciplines.
Successful Graduates will need to demonstrate their understanding of the NGDP’s key skills and behaviours through a competitive, multi-stage application process. Local Graduates participate in the same process as national Graduates but have the advantage of a guaranteed interview.
