Crossroads Care Surrey are looking to hire multiple Emergency Carer Support Workers, who will be required to provide emergency care to children, young people and adults with wide ranging care and support needs in their own homes or local communities. 

This role will involve working with a partner to provide ‘12 hours’ on/12 hours’ off’ care for up to 48 hours in total, depending on the choice of Roster 1 or 2, and the choice of days or nights, within the following times:

Please note that our Carer Support Workers who work nights will be expected to remain awake at all times and be willing to stay within Surrey, remain contactable at all times and not consume any alcohol during on-call shift times.


What will I be responsible for?

You will:

•    Provide person-centred care in people’s homes or the community, at short notice.
•    Work directly with individuals to meet their care and support needs, reassuring them at a time of uncertainty and facilitating activities that develop or maintain skills, hobbies and interests.
•    Provide personal care, support with eating and drinking, or medication.  This may also involve the administration of specialist medical tasks such as PEG management, oxygen therapy or epilepsy/anaphylaxis emergency medication.
•    Promote independence – do ‘with’; not do ‘for’.
•    De-escalate anxiety-led or challenging behaviours through Positive Behaviour Support techniques.
•    Respond quickly to any callouts in your designated shift times.
•    Make and record accurate visit notes during your provision of care.
•    Liaise with our Care Assessment Officers to complete an urgent assessment if there is not a full Care Plan/Risk Assessment in place, other than the Carer’s Emergency Plan.
•    Report and record any accidents/incidents and raise any safeguarding concerns to the management team.
•    Liaise with our Clinical Care Manager/Referrals Manager to ensure that Social Services are activating a plan if emergency care is needed after the initial 48 hours.

Could this be the ideal role for me?

To be considered for this role, you will require the following skills and competencies:

•    GCSE Maths and English, level 4 (grade C) or above
•    Care Certificate and at least one year’s experience of working in a frontline care role.
•    Able to develop good working relationships with carers and people with care and support needs, while maintaining appropriate personal boundaries.
•    Able to work independently and take initiative while working within Crossroads Care policies, procedures, guidance. 
•    Able to demonstrate care and respect for adults and children with care and support needs.  
•    Able to demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills.  
•    Ability to learn to use or electronic care planning software (ACP).
•    Understanding of the importance of confidentiality.  
•    Understanding of the needs of carers.
•    Flexibility to pick up shifts at short notice.
•    A kind and caring approach to supporting people.
•    A passion to improve the lives of others.
•    A willingness to develop and apply learning to practice.
•    Full UK driver’s licence with use of a car and willingness to travel within Surrey.

Desirable experience:

•    NVQ 2/3 in Health and Social Care
•    Positive Behaviour Support certificate or training 
•    Experience of providing care to people with learning disabilities or neurodiversity. 
•    Experience of working with adults and/or children with care and support needs. 
•    Experience of following risk assessments and care plans.
•    Experience of using Positive Behaviour Support techniques to de-escalate anxiety-led behaviours.
