Thrings has an exciting opportunity for an NQ – 2 years PQE Solicitor to join our Planning and Environmental Team in our Bristol office.  You’ll be joining a team of Partners, Associates and Paralegal supporting the team to service their clients. Whilst the role sits within our Planning and Environmental team, you will also work closely with colleagues from our Real Estate and Agriculture teams supporting the work they do within the urban development arena.


Led by Alex Madden (Head of Planning & Partner) the Team acts for a range of house builders, property developers, landowners, banks and rural businesses.  We have a number of strong relationships with leading industry bodies such as the ALA, RICS, CLA, TFA and the NFU.  You will need to demonstrate experience of Planning Law either at a Paralegal level, during your training contract or as an NQ.  We’re looking for a team player, who is a confident communicator and able to provide a first class service to our clients.  Someone who our clients can relate to and convert technical legal information into clear and concise commercial advice is likely to be successful.


To be our next Solicitor you will need to demonstrate that you’re organised, can work well under pressure, that you know when to make decisions, and when to seek guidance. You’ll need great time management, as you’ll need to record your time and manage your non-chargeable activity throughout the working week.  You will be assisting with the running of the teams caseloads with a view to you longer term running your own.  In addition you will support the business development and networking initiatives members of the team go to.  It’s a great opportunity to work with well regarded Legal experts who are noted by Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 for the work they do.


The type of work you can expect to get involved in is:

  • Negotiating and drafting planning and infrastructure agreements and due diligence reports
  • Preparing and submitting planning applications such as Certificate of Lawfulness applications
  • Assisting with planning appeals
  • Attending planning appeal hearing and court hearings with Counsel/colleagues
  • Advising clients on statutory challenges in the High Court
  • Research and advice on planning matters
