Making the most of your application
Completing your applicationaddremove
Applications should be completed online via our vacancies website. We appreciate the time it takes to apply for jobs so use a short application form that collects minimal information and allows you to upload a CV and a supporting document.
Applying online lets you track your application through your candidate portal and receive email notifications. Offline applications are possible, but you won't be able to track your application and will only receive written notification if you are shortlisted. No acknowledgement letters or rejection letters are issued for offline applications. To apply offline, please contact our Recruitment Team at helpmeapply@gov.im or call (01624) 686300.
As an equal opportunities employer, we request that you complete an equal opportunities form. This information is anonymous, separated from your application, and used only for aggregated statistical purposes. It is not part of the selection process. While completing this section is optional, your participation helps us monitor the effectiveness of our equal opportunities policy, and we would appreciate your engagement.
CVs and Cover Lettersaddremove
Your CV and cover letter will be thoroughly reviewed by the shortlisting panel. Their decision to advance you to the next stage will be based on these documents and how well they align with the Person Specification for the role.
CVs
Given our brief application form, submitting a CV with your application is required. When preparing your CV, ensure it includes the following details:
Education/Qualifications - Specify where and when each qualification was obtained (e.g., the name of the school, university, etc.), the exact title of the qualification, and the grade achieved. If successful, you will need to provide original documents to verify your qualifications and any memberships in relevant professional bodies. Failure to do so may result in the withdrawal of your offer.
Employment history - Start with your current or most recent job and work backwards. Include details of past employers, the positions held, employment dates, reasons for leaving, and a brief description of your key responsibilities and achievements. Explain any gaps in employment. Again, if you are successful, references will be taken to verify your employment history.
Any false or misleading information on any application or documents may result in your offer of employment being withdrawn.
Cover Letters
Submitting a cover letter with your application is optional but is highly recommended.
Use this document to clearly explain to the hiring panel why you want the role and how you meet the criteria outlined in the Person Specification.
Some applicants use a table format to directly address each listed attribute and provide examples demonstrating how they meet the criteria. You can include examples from work, voluntary activities, school experiences, projects, internships, or personal experiences to support your cover letter.
Referencesaddremove
You will be required to provide two referees in your application, one of which must be your current or most recent employer, responsible officer, or course tutor if you are in full-time education.
References are typically requested after a conditional offer of employment is verbally made, but your referees may be contacted before the interview unless you do not give permission to do so on your application. If you indicate that we should not contact your referees, we will only do so if you are offered the position and you give your permission.
Please provide corporate email addresses for employer or educational references; we will not accept references from Gmail, Hotmail, iCloud, Manx.net, or similar accounts.
Work Permits and visas
Isle of Man Work Permitsaddremove
Under the provisions of the Control of Employment Act 2014 and it's associated Regulations, any person who is not classed as an "Isle of Man Worker" requires a work permit issued by the Department for Enterprise before taking up employment or self-employment in the Isle of Man, except in the case of a exempted employments.
Applicants should familiarise themselves with whether they need a work permit before applying as answering this question incorrectly on the application form may result in your application being discounted.
More information on Work Permits and how you can qualify as an Isle of Man Worker are available here. The list of exempted employment/occupations is here, it's worth noting if you require an Isle of Man issued Worker Migrant visa you will be exempt from requiring a work permit.
Isle of Man visasaddremove
Generally speaking, you will require an Isle of Man Worker Migrant visa to be in place prior to taking up employment with the Isle of Man Public Service if you are:
Non-EU, EEA and Swiss citizens
EU citizens who have never resided in the UK or Isle of Man from 1 January 2021
In order to obtain an Isle of Man Worker Migrant visa, you must hold a valid and approved Confirmation of Employment (COE) that your employer has applied for to the Isle of Man Immigration Service.
Only once the COE has been issued can you then apply for the Isle of Man entry clearance via the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) service.
The Isle of Man Immigration Service should be contacted for advice or guidance in relation to immigration for work purposes. Click here to visit their website for detailed information and guidance.
Other Information
Policy on criminal convictions and the recruitment of ex-offendersaddremove
As an organisation using the Disclosure and Barring Service (or similar services in Scotland or Northern Ireland) to assess candidates' suitability for positions of trust, we aim to comply fully with the DBS Code of Practice and undertake to treat all candidates for positions fairly.
You can read the Isle of Man Public Service's statement on criminal convictions and policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders here.
Internal employeesaddremove
If you are currently employed by the Isle of Man Public Service and are successful with gaining employment with a different Isle of Man Government employer your continuous period of service, for the purpose of statutory employment rights, will be broken.
This means that when you start your new job, your period of service starts again from the date you start working for your new employer.
If you are an employee of the Public Services Commission, your continuous service remains unbroken and your statutory rights are preserved, provided you move to another Public Service Commission position within a Government Department, Board, or Office.
For example:
A staff member employed by Manx Care as a Registered Nurse who moved to a Civil Servant post employed by the Public Services Commission (PSC) would break their continuous service.
A lecturer employed by Department of Education, Sport and Culture (DESC) who moved to a Teacher post still employed by DESC would retain their continuous service.
A staff member employed by PSC in a Civil Servant post who moves to a post employed by the Gambling Supervision Commission (or: Public Sector Pensions Authority, Financial Intelligence Unit, Manx Industrial Relations etc) would break their continuous service.
A staff member employed by the PSC in a Manual and Craft Worker post who moves to a Civil Servant post still employed by the PSC would retain their continuous service.
We acknowledge this is a complex area, so if you would like to confidentially discuss whether an internal move would have an impact on your continuous
period of employment feel free to call the Recruitment Team on 01624 686300 or email helpmeapply@gov.im.
