Job Description

Our On-Call Firefighters are members of the community who are paid to respond to a variety of emergencies. They face all kinds of challenges from floods to road traffic collisions; they also inform our community about fire safety and prevention. They are notified of an emergency call via a personal pager, which they carry with them when they are on duty.

You must be aged 18 at the start of the training course.

Can you:
• Attend the training night on station on the allocated night each week?
• Provide on-call availability between 60-120 hours per week* and be able to reach the station within the specified response time (usually 5 minutes)?
* Typically, we are looking for people that can offer daytime midweek availability.

There are 3 training courses per year (subject to candidate numbers). All trainees must attend the full course.

Some of our On-Call Firefighters are in full-time employment with agreement from their employers to leave to attend an emergency call. If you are employed, you must have the permission of your employer to be an On-Call Firefighter - even if you are not responding to fire calls whilst at work.

Due to the sensitive nature of the duties that the postholder will be expected to undertake, a basic disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service will be sought for successful applicants.

Throughout the year we accept registers of interest for all 27 stations which employ On-Call Firefighters. Please click on the name of the station below that you wish to apply for.
