The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service has opened applications for On Call Retained Firefighters to join their teams across the Isle of Man.
We have vacancies at Laxey, Ramsey, Peel, Port Erin (Rushen) and Castletown & Malew Stations. We are also creating a talent pool for Kirk Michael and Douglas (Retained) Stations.
Successful applicants applying for positions at stations where there is a talent pool, and no advertised vacancies, will be held on an active list for any positions that might become available in the 24 months following the interviews.
There are various contracts available:
- 120 hours per week (Mon-Sun)
- 110 hours per week (Mon-Sun)
- 100 hours per week (Mon-Sun)
- 63 hours per week (Mon-Sun, 08:00 – 17:00)
- 48 hours per week (08:00 Sat – 08:00 Mon)
- 45 hours per week (Mon-Fri, 08:00 – 17:00)

About the role
You will work with, and within, the community to prevent emergencies occurring, minimise their impact when they do, and to respond effectively when required within a safe working environment. This post will require you to act as an integral part of an operational firefighting and emergency response team to protect people and property from fire and other hazards in the most competent and effective manner, to the highest possible standard of care and quality.
You will respond swiftly and safely to all emergency calls and requests for assistance, and deal with emergencies as directed whilst working effectively and efficiently as a member of a disciplined team.
As a member of the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service, Firefighters will be required to demonstrate by example and action the behaviours that are detailed within The National Firefighter Selection Personal Qualities and Attributes, and meet the essential criteria of the Person Specification associated with this role.

Things to note
All Retained Firefighters must live within 2 miles of, or within the town boundary of their chosen fire station. A full driving licence and access to your own vehicle are desirable for this post and a uniform will be provided. Please note that a full driving licence is required to become a qualified Firefighter.
A standard police check is required for this post, which the Isle of Man Government will cover the cost of for you.
Please note a relocation package is not available for this role.

Pop In Sessions - These sessions are an opportunity to visit your local station and have a chat with the firefighters. There are no physical elements to the session, however, it’s a good chance to talk directly to the firefighters at your local station. They can also talk to you about the Come and Try It Sessions at Douglas station. The Pop In Sessions will be between 7pm & 8pm at the below stations on the following dates;
- Ramsey - Wednesday, 10th September 2025
- Rushen - Thursday, 11th September 2025
- Laxey - Tuesday, 16th September 2025
- Peel - Wednesday, 17th September 2025
- Castletown - Thursday, 18th September 2025
- Kirk Michael - Monday, 22nd September 2025
Come and Try it sessions - This is an opportunity to try the bleep test, wear a BA set and try rolling out and making up hose. The Come and Try It Sessions will be held at Douglas Fire Station on Monday 15th September 2025 and Thursday 25th September 2025 between 6:15pm and 8pm, with a female only Come and Try It Session on Tuesday 23rd September 2025, also between 6:15pm and 8pm.
National Firefighter Ability Test - If you need to sit the National Firefighter Ability Test, this will be held between 6-9.30pm on Tuesday 14th October, Wednesday 15th October and Thursday 16th October 2025 at Castletown & Malew Fire Station. The Come and Try It Sessions will help you understand the test more if you have any concerns or questions.
The Physical Assessments - These will be held during the week commencing Monday 3rd November 2025 at Douglas Fire Station. The times and dates will be confirmed based on the number of candidates in for the assessment.
Aptitude Tests - These will be held on Saturday 15th November and if required Sunday 16th November 2025 at Douglas Fire Station.
Interview Dates - The interviews will be the week commencing Monday 24th November 2025
