About the role

We’re looking for a dedicated Teacher of Science to join Ballakermeen High School’s highly successful Science Department. A specialism in Chemistry is desirable, but not essential. In 2025 the Science team achieved their best ever GCSE and A‑level results with 78% A*-C at GCSE and an average of 74% A*-B at A2. Whilst we are delighted with the outcomes achieved, we remain committed to making continual improvements.

At Ballkermeen, we believe that every second of learning counts. We have the highest of expectations but communicate them within a warm, welcoming and friendly learning environment.

Your professional development is important to us and all staff have access to a research-informed Professional Development programme that is delivered over the course of the academic year.

Applications are welcomed from both ECTs and experienced Teachers.

A workplace that invests in you

Newly qualified teachers will automatically start on a generous salary of £42,718 per annum (spine point M4).

A competitive salary that increases each 12 months until you reach the salary maximum.

Subject to meeting eligibility criteria, you will be offered two pensions arrangements: the Teachers Superannuation scheme or the Isle of Man Government Defined Contribution (DC) arrangement.

If you are returning to the Island and have participated in the Department’s Student Loan scheme for tuition fees, the loan will be repaid by the Department upon completion of your second year working as a teacher at one of the Island’s schools. The repayment is subject to a maximum of £7,500 for a three year degree course or £10,000 for a four year degree course, and the requirements detailed in the Teacher Loan Cancellation Policy.

If you are an Early Career Teacher, you will receive payments of £2,000 at the beginning of your first and second school years in teaching, following the completion of the ECT induction period (2 years).

A subject shortage allowance of up to £500 a month for a maximum of 8 months if you are offered a permanent position in a Maths, English or Science teaching position (without TLR).

Financial support to get you, your family and your belongings, including one motor vehicle to the Isle of Man. We will pay 70% of any removal or storage costs incurred.

Help to pay your rent/mortgage while you settle in with a housing allowance up to £500 per month over 2 years.

If you are relocating to the Isle of Man, you will receive financial help towards the costs of visiting to the Island to view housing and to visit your new school. You are eligible to receive up to £325 each for you and your partner and, if applicable, £140 each for up to 2 dependent children.

For those returning to the Island after graduating from university, you will receive a refund on your national insurance contributions during the first 12 months of your employment, up to £4,400.

Free access to the Isle of Man Government Staff Welfare Service which offers professional counselling, emotional support and signposting on a wide range of issues.

Discounted access to the NSC gym and island swimming pools as well as 1-to-1 support programmes and exercise classes with qualified instructors through the ACTIV8 scheme.

You may be eligible for a Blue Light Card, unlocking a wide range of exclusive discounts on shopping, food and leisure activities at hundreds of popular high street and online retailers.
