Everything you need to know about working in care

We know applying for a new job — especially in care — can bring up lots of questions. Whether you’re brand new to the role, returning after a break, or just want to know how we do things at Unique, you’ll find straightforward answers here.

If there’s anything we haven’t covered, just give us a call. We’re happy to talk it through with you.

Getting started

Do I need experience to apply?
addremove

In short, no — for hourly roles what matters most is that you’re kind, reliable and willing to learn. Many of our Caregivers join us from other careers or after a break.

It’s slightly different for live-in roles, where we ask for at least one year of care experience. This is because you’ll be supporting someone 1:1 in their own home for longer periods, so we need to know you’re confident with the basics of personal care and daily routines beforehand.

Can I apply if I’m looking for part-time work?
addremove

Yes. We offer flexible roles to fit around your life — including part-time, full-time and live-in care. Just let us know what you’re looking for and we’ll help find something that works.

For hourly care roles, yes — you’ll need to drive between clients. You’ll also need access to your own car. For Extra Care or live-in roles, a licence isn’t essential.

How quickly can I start?
addremove

Once your interview, DBS and references are complete and you’ve attended training, you’re good to go. This can take as little as 1–2 weeks if everything comes back promptly.

Our training is unpaid, which is typical in the care sector. That’s because it’s not classed as working time — you’re not delivering care yet, and there’s no obligation to stay on after completing it. But we do cover your travel and accommodation while you’re with us, so you’re not out of pocket.

The training itself is industry-leading and gives you a recognised foundation you can take anywhere in your care career. You’ll spend four or five days face to face with our trainers, complete your e-learning, and go on shadow visits — all to make sure you feel confident before you start.

Why do I need four references — and what if I don’t have them?
addremove

We require four references from four different peopletwo employment and two character references — as part of our compliance process to keep people safe.

If you don’t have two employer references, don’t worry — we’ll work with you to find suitable alternatives and guide you through the process.

Most DBS checks come back within a few days. Even if you’ve had one recently for a different job, the law requires a new Enhanced DBS for each new care employer — unless you’re registered for the update service.

The role

Will I visit the same clients each week?
addremove

Yes, wherever possible. We carefully match you with regular clients so you can build trust and get to know them properly — not just pop in and out. That means consistent hours and familiar faces.

For hourly care, visits are always a minimum of one hour. That gives you time to offer proper care without feeling rushed.

In Extra Care, visits can be shorter — often around 15 to 30 minutes — as you'll be supporting several residents in one building throughout the day. These services are often commissioned by local authorities and designed for shorter, practical support.

What’s the difference between Hourly Care, Live-in and Extra Care?
addremove
  • Hourly Care: You visit people in their own homes, supporting them with everyday tasks and companionship.

  • Extra Care: You work in one building, supporting different residents in shorter visits across the day.

  • Live-in Care: You live in a client’s home for a set period, offering one-to-one care with real consistency.

Do I need to wear a uniform?
addremove

No — our Caregivers don’t wear uniforms. We believe it helps people feel more relaxed and at home when their Caregiver looks like a guest or friend, not a visitor in uniform.

To a certain extent, yes. We’ll always try to accommodate your availability — and the more flexible you are, the more work we can offer you. Most of our hourly visits fall between 7am and 2pm, and again from 4pm to 10pm. Let us know what suits you and we’ll help find the right fit.

For hourly care, you’ll work within your service area — whether that’s Solihull, South Warwickshire, or Coventry & Kenilworth. You’ll have an experienced Care Coordinator who schedules your calls, and we always try to keep visits as close to home as possible. Most clients will be a short drive apart, and you’ll be paid mileage between visits too.

For live-in care, placements could be anywhere in the UK. We’ll always try to match you with a client and location that suits you, and we’ll talk through the options in advance.

There’s always someone on call. If something urgent happens in the evening or weekend, you’ll never be left to deal with it alone.

Supportive, down-to-earth and friendly. You’re never just a number here — you’re part of a local team that look out for each other and genuinely care about the work we do.

How do you handle last-minute shift changes or sickness cover?
addremove

If something unexpected happens, your local team will step in to make arrangements. You’ll always be kept in the loop and never asked to do something unreasonable at short notice.

How do you handle complaints or concerns raised by Caregivers?
addremove

We take concerns seriously. You’ll have regular check-ins with your manager, and there’s always someone available if you want to talk. We listen, act on feedback, and treat everyone with respect.

If something’s not right, we’ll work with you to resolve it. You’ll never be left to struggle — we’re here to help, and always have someone on call.

Pay and benefits

How much will I get paid — and how often?
addremove

Your exact pay will depend on the role and location. For example, in 2025, hourly Caregivers earn between £14.00 and £15.30 per hour depending on the time and day, with Bank Holidays paid at £28.00 per hour. Live-in Caregivers earn from £124.00 to £170.00 per day, and Extra Care roles start from £12.40 per hour.

Pay is monthly, on the 15th of each month (earlier if it falls on a weekend or bank holiday).

Is mileage paid for?
addremove

Yes — we pay mileage for travel between clients in hourly care roles. You’ll get 35p per mile.

We don’t pay for the first 10 miles of travel each day, as this is classed as your commute. After that, any miles you drive between client visits are paid — and we try to keep your rounds local, so you're not spending ages in the car.

Absolutely. You’ll be directly employed by us, not working as a contractor. That means proper holiday pay, a permanent contract, job security and support.

Do you offer guaranteed hours or is the work zero-hours?
addremove

We don’t offer zero-hours contracts. All our Caregivers are employed on permanent contracts. For hourly care, we offer both variable and guaranteed hour contracts depending on your availability and location — we’ll chat through the options with you. Live-in roles are always variable hours, with longer placements and consistent income. Guaranteed hours may be available in some hourly care areas depending on your availability.

How do you recognise and reward Caregivers for their work?
addremove

We regularly celebrate length of service, shout out great feedback from clients, and check in to say thank you. We also have recognition awards and other ways to show appreciation — because your work deserves to be recognised.

We believe your well-being comes first, so we offer flexibility wherever possible. Whether you’re balancing other commitments, family, or simply need a bit of space in your week, we’ll work with you to build a rota that works.

When will I get my first pay?
addremove

You’ll be paid on the 15th of each month, so it depends when you start. If your start date falls early in the month, your first pay will be on the 15th of that same month. If it’s later in the month, your first pay will come on the 15th of the following month. You'll also receive a detailed payslip showing your hours, mileage, and any enhancements like weekend or bank holiday rates.

Support, training and progression

What training and support will I get?
addremove

You’ll get a full induction with four or five days (depending on the role) of in-person training at our Learning Centre in Stratford-upon-Avon.

This covers moving and handling, classroom sessions, and e-learning, followed by shadowing visits (fully paid) so you feel confident before supporting clients on your own.

Once you’ve started in your role, you’ll also complete your Care Certificate with us — a recognised qualification for anyone beginning a career in care.

Alongside this, you’ll receive regular supervision, refresher training, and ongoing support from your local office and senior team. You’ll never be left to figure things out alone.

Can I progress into more senior roles?
addremove

Yes — many of our team members go on to become Senior Caregivers, Field Care Supervisors or into office roles. We’ll support your development every step of the way with training, NVQs and mentoring.

Is there a clear pathway for progression or promotion?
addremove

Absolutely. We’re keen to help you grow in your career and will support you to take the next step when you’re ready. You'll have a clear progression plan, if this is something you'd like, that you talk through with your manager during your 1-2-1s.
